Stranger Things EPs Explain Doctor Brenner's True Motive in Season 4

One of the interesting things about Stranger Things Season 4 has been the return of Doctor Martin Brenner, who was believed to have been killed off in the series. However, the character's surprising comeback also meant seeing a different side of a man who was viewed as one of the main villains in previous seasons. So what are Brenner's true motives in the fourth season? The Duffer brothers offered an interesting insight into what the character is all about.

Ross and Matt Duffer recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about Stranger Things Season 4. The show creators discussed the certain changes in Brenner's return and how Matthew Modine intended to portray the character in the fourth season.

"Yeah, we wanted to show another side to him. There is more to him than we saw in Season 1, and we wanted to get to know him better," Matt said.

"And there's no one more defensive of Brenner than Matthew Modine. Some of it is us infusing that in," he continued. "[To him,] he's not a villain. Everything he's doing, at least in his mind, he has a reason for, and he thinks it's for the greater good. So we just wanted to make sure that the character had an opportunity to spell that out, not just to Eleven, but to the audience."

We certainly Brenner in a different light but that doesn't necessarily mean his intentions were all good. Still, it was great seeing Matthew Modine truly embracing the character and portraying him as more than just the typical villain. With that in mind, we could expect to see more of Brenner in the final two episodes of Season 4.

The first seven episodes of Stranger Things Season 4 are now streaming on Disney+. The last two episodes of the fourth season will premiere on July 1, 2022.
