Stranger Things Creators Open Up About The Fate Of (SPOILER)

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the third season of Stranger Things.

There was a lot of heartbreak when Netflix released Stranger Things Season 3. For the first time since its release, the series killed off one of its main characters.

Towards the end of the season, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Jim Hopper (David Harbour) try their best to shut down the Russian particle accelerator that's opening a rift between the Earth's dimension and the Upside Down. Running out of time after defeating a Terminator-like Russian agent, Hopper ends up sacrificing his life so that Joyce can shut down the accelerator and save everyone from the Mind Flayer.

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Duffer Brothers, creators of the popular science fiction horror series, were asked whether or not Hopper would somehow manage to return during the fourth season of Stranger Things. After all, the closing scene of the season finale seemed to point at an unknown American being held prisoner inside a heavily guarded Russian institution.

Could that American be Chief Hopper?

"Assuming there's a season 4, obviously the question of who that American is in that cell and then also what they're doing with the Demogorgon, that is a tease," Ross Duffer. "We try to tee up some season 4."

Still, while the scene might tease Hopper's potential return, Matt Duffer doesn't want fans to keep their hopes up.

"You definitely should not assume anything," the Duffer brother teased. "The line that Russian guard said is purposely intended to spark debate. We need people to ask the very questions that you're asking."

Guess we'll just have to be patient and wait for the next season of Stranger Things to know whether Hopper really survived.

Stranger Things Season 3 is currently streaming on Netflix.
