Star Wars Tries To Explain Why Leia Remembered Padme Amidala In Return Of The Jedi

One of the most enduring plotholes in the Star Wars Universe is Leia Organa's memory of her mother Padme Amidala in Return of the Jedi. When Luke Skywalker asks whether Leia remembers their mother, she says that Padme was "very beautiful, kind, but sad." But how could Leia remember someone who died shortly after giving birth to the twins? Star Wars has tried to explain the memory in a new comic book anthology series.

In IDW Publishing's Star Wars Adventures Annual 2019, the story So Much More introduces us to a young Leia being brought to her adoptive mother Breha Organa to a statue of Padme. Breha then tells the little girl about Padme's heroic acts depicted in several panels. At the end of it all, Breha gives her young daughter a sweet reminder.

"Leia, love, I know you're too young to understand all this… to remember, even. But I want you to hold on to this image, this feeling. That spark – the spark. You have it, too," Breha says to the girl.

We're not sure if Breha does this several times so that Leia would understand that her birth mother is a true hero but it could confirm that the memories Leia had were from the stories of her adoptive mother. Leia might even remember that the statue of Padme was indeed beautiful but sad. Either way, this should finally explain why Leia has a strong memory of Padme in Return of the Jedi.
