Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Writer Says J.J. Abrams 'Adores and Respects' Kelly Marie Tran

Upon the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, fans of Kelly Marie Tran were deeply disappointed with the final cut after her character was put on the sidelines and had barely over a minute of screentime. However, despite the lack of scenes compared to The Last Jedi,Episode IX writer points out director J.J. Abrams' thoughts on the actress.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, The Rise of Skywalker writer Chris Terrio talked about the lack of Rose Tico scenes in the film. "As I've said elsewhere before, there were a couple of scenes that we shot with Rose that I wish had made it into the final cut," he explained. "You'd be hard pressed to find a screenwriter who doesn't wish that all his scenes were treated as inspired gospel and ended up in the film exactly as written."

Terrio pointed out that "the nature of the scenes" are the cause of other scenes falling out of the film. He "respects" the difficulty of decision that Abrams had to make, especially since he wears both the hats of a screenwriter and a director. That being said, Terrio made it clear that Abrams "adores and respects" Tran and that he would have loved to keep "every second" he shot with the actress in the final cut.

To be specific, Terrio mentioned in a previous interview that Rose had fewer scenes because of the "difficulty of using Carrie [Fisher]'s footage" in the way they wanted to. In addition, the scenes they initially wrote with Rose and Leia "turned out not to meet the standard of photo-realism" the way they had hoped for. "The last thing we were doing was deliberately trying to sideline Rose," Terrio explained.
