Star Wars fans were stunned when they heard the familiar cackle of Darth Sidious in the last few seconds of the teaser for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. No one really expected Emperor Palpatine to make an appearance in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy, not after his obvious fall from the Death Star in Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi.
Ever since the big reveal, fans have been busy speculating just how Palpatine makes his way back in The Rise of Skywalker, and now, a brand new theory suggests that a promo for the movie may help explain how the Sith Lord returns.
Lucasfilm just recently released a brand new TV spot for The Rise of Skywalker, and while fans have been busy focusing on Leia's lightsaber in the promo, Making Star Wars has spotted a shot in the video which may reveal how Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) travel to Exogol to confront Palpatine.

This scene is a bright shade of red, a sequence which Making Star Wars suggests is the "hyperspace lane to Exegol." The Star Wars fansite claims that Kylo Ren is going to make the trip to Palpatine's hideout a bit early in The Rise of Skywalker, and once he arrives there, he "walks under the giant cube, and finds an old man in his bed claiming to be Darth Sidious."
After that, Kylo Ren has the First Order reuniting with the remains of the Galactic Empire.
It's an interesting theory, however, fans have to remember that the sequence could mean anything. We can't be entirely sure whether or not the red sequence means entrance to Exegol – we'll have to wait for Lucasfilm for confirmation. Until then, theories should remain just that, theories.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
