Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Star John Boyega Apologizes for 'Badly Worded' Comments

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker star John Boyega has decided to apologize for comments that he made in an interview with Variety that some fans have been interpreting as an attack on his Episode IX co-star, Kelly Marie Tran.

Taking to Twitter earlier this morning, Boyega decided to clear up the comments that he gave to Variety about social media. During the interview, the British actor told the entertainment news outlet that the sphere of social media could be a difficult environment "for those who are not mentally strong," and then continued on commenting that "you are weak to believe in every single thing that you read."

The Star Wars sequel trilogy actor didn't really name anyone when giving his comments about navigating the online community, however, some fans have been interpreting the interview was a jab against Tran who decided to leave social media last year because of all of the attacks that she received from toxic fans who disliked her character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Resistance mechanic, Rose Tico.

Posting on Twitter, Boyega cleared the air, saying that he wasn't referring to Tran. The actor also apologized for his comments, saying that they were "badly worded."

"In no way was I referring to Kelly when I made my comments although the interviewer mentioned her given the topic. I was really speaking from my own perspective throughout this franchise. Sometimes I've felt strong and sometimes I've felt weak. Badly worded though. I apologize."

Fans appreciated the tweet, saying that they understand Boyega's intention, thanking the actor for his decision to clarify the matter. While it's pretty clear that Boyega in no way meant his comments as an attack against Tran, we appreciate the actor's initiative in clearing up the air the moment fans started misconstruing his comments. Boyega understands that Tran has been through a lot already.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to premiere on December 20, 2019.
