Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker might be one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year, but it seems like one of the movie's cast members has been expecting some sort of backlash over the third and final entry in Disney's sequel trilogy.
Speaking in an interview with Cinema Blend,Star Wars newcomer Richard E. Grant talks about The Rise of Skywalker and the potential backlash the film might receive. During his discussion with the entertainment news outlet, Grant reason that a Game of Thrones syndrome (the series was met with heavy criticisms during its final season) seems inevitable with The Rise of Skywalker because of the nature of the Star Wars fanbase.
According to Grant, fans are passionate and possessive, and while the actor hopes that there will be a number of Star Wars followers that enjoy Episode IX, there's still going to be some people that don't feel the same way.
"Inevitably there will be a Game of Thrones syndrome to Star Wars because you can't please everybody all of the time. And the ending, what people want it to be and what it actually is, hopefully, for the majority of people seeing it, they will feel that they've had their wishes fulfilled," the actor told the publication, "But inevitably there's gonna be people that don't feel that way. And you can't anticipate that. You have to do what is honest and true to you. And I think that J.J. [Abrams] and Chris [Terrio] have done that to the absolute ends of their ability."
Part of that backlash can already be felt. The Rise of Skywalker has yet to premiere, and yet early reviews for the film have been divisive. There have been some pretty harsh reviews on the film and now Episode IX sits on a "Rotten" score on Rotten Tomatoes. Taking note of the poor reviews and the low score, Star Wars trolls have already begun attacking the film on social media, barraging The Rise of Skywalker posts on Star Wars' official social media accounts and pushing for "J.J. Abrams Is Over Party."
Despite all of this negativity, we're hoping that Episode IX makes it through and continues to have a successful premiere this Friday.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits cinemas on December 20, 2019.
