Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will go down in history as one of the most controversial films in the franchise's history and not in a good way. While it did have a number of good moments, the movie was handicapped by having one of the worst twists in Star Wars history by having Rey be a Palpatine, not to mention the kiss between Rey and Kylo Ren, which felt like a way to please fanfiction, ermm, fans.
Well, it looks like those fanfiction writers are about to be disappointed as the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker novel has stated that this kiss wasn't a romantic one. Apparently, this was a kiss of "gratitude" since they've finally found each other. Because that's what you do when you're grateful right? You kiss them in the mouth?
Here's the full excerpt:
"His heart was full as Rey reached for his face, let her fingers linger against his cheek. And then, wonder of wonders, she leaned forward and kissed him. A kiss of gratitude, acknowledgement of their connection, celebration that they'd found each other at last.
But then she drew back, concern on her face. She could feel him growing cold.
Ben smiled at her.
He had given Rey back to the galaxy. It wouldn't atone for the darkness he'd wrought, but it was what he could do."
To say that this whole thing has been a mess is an understatement. It's clear that Disney and LucasFilm are trying to do as much damage control as they can, especially with the announcement of Star Wars: The High Republic, which will be set 200 years before The Phantom Menace. Getting to know the golden age of Jedi should wipe the taste of this movie out of our mouths.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be coming to Blu-Ray on March 31.
