Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker: Length of John Williams’ Score Could Hint at a 3-Hour Runtime

Legendary composer John Williams looks to be making his final Star Wars score for The Rise of Skywalker, but until Lucasfilm gives us any new promos, we'll have no idea what to expect. What's interesting is Williams' brother Don has revealed the length of the score for TROS, and it's likely that we have a hint at how long the actual movie is.

Talking during a panel at the Academy of Scoring Arts, Williams explained:

"John's started up with another Star Wars… We started our last week. He's got 135 minutes worth of music to write. Okay, so that kind of tells you how long the film is [laughs]. It is top to bottom music. We've done four days. We just scratched the surface. I think we've got something like 34 minutes in the can at this point."

With The Last Jedi coming out as the longest Star Wars movie, it did have a score of 1:17:31 (compared to 2:32:00 runtime.) If Williams is writing more than 2-hours-worth of music for The Rise of Skywalker, we could be looking at a movie that actually passes the 3-hour mark. I mean, if Avengers: Endgame could earn so much with a 3-hour runtime, how much more when it comes to Star Wars?

Of course, it's likely that the film will still try to stay close to 2 hours. This is all just speculation after all.

We don't know for sure when the next TROS reveal is going to be, but everyone is hoping for a full trailer come the D23 Expo later this month. We're also expecting the first look at Disney+'s The Mandalorian.

For now, catch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters Dec. 20.
