Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Presents A New Class Says J.J. Abrams

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker isn't just going to serve as the end of the Skywalker Saga. It's also meant to take the Star Wars to new heights.

Sure, Lucasfilm might not be the most generous studio when it comes to plot details, however, The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams isn't afraid to tease the Star Wars fanbase with what's to come.

Vanity Fair just recently did an in-depth spread on the Star Wars sequel trilogy's third and final film, and in one of the publication's segments is an interview with The Force Awakens director. While most fans would want the film to focus on the remaining legacy characters, Abrams explains that the trilogy really focuses on the new generation of Star Wars villains and heroes.

"This trilogy is about this young generation, this new generation, having to deal with all the debt that has come before," the filmmaker explained, "And it's the sins of the father, and it's the wisdom and the accomplishments of those who did great things, but it's also those who committed atrocities, and the idea that this group is up against this unspeakable evil and are they prepared? Are they ready? What have they learned from before? It's less about grandeur. It's less about restoring an old age. It's more about preserving a sense of freedom and not being one of the oppressed."

The director when on explaining the overall idea behind the upcoming Star Wars entry, reassuring fans that he's still going to keep in mind the legacy of the Star Wars franchise as he builds The Rise of Skywalker.

"The idea of the movie is kind of how I felt going into the movie as a filmmaker, which is to say that I've inherited all this stuff, great stuff, and good wisdom, and the good and the bad, and it's all coming to this end, and the question is, do we have what it takes to succeed?"

Hopefully, The Rise of Skywalker manages to meet fan expectations while raising the bar for the franchise – a daunting, but not impossible task. Let's see how the film fairs.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
