Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker introduced a new character named Babu Frik, a small and adorable droidsmith who quickly captured the fans' hearts. Not much is known about Babu besides being a part of Zori Bliss' Space Runners, but it seems like he has a tragic backstory.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Shirley Henderson, who voiced Babu Frik in The Rise of Skywalker, talked about the character's story aside from what fans have seen in the movie. "Beyond the film, Babu has lived a life," she said. "Somewhere out there is a lost love."

"He thinks about her sometimes when he sits down in his workshop and lets his thoughts drift away," Henderson added. "That's what I think, anyway."

This raises some questions, in particular, how did Babu Frik become a part of Zorii's crew in the first place, who his lost love was and how they got separated. While those are certainly intriguing, this is obviously Henderson's idea of the character's backstory and may not be canon. That said, the backstory she shared was likely something that helped her bring the character to life for Episode IX.

What's certain is, Babu was prevented from on-screen death by Steven Spielberg. The creature effects creative supervisor Neal Scanlan says Spielberg asked what happened to the character when director J.J. Abrams screened the movie for him. "Everybody thought, ‘Oh God, what did happen to Babu?'" Obviously, the droidsmith survived, and here's to hoping that we'd get to know more about the adorable character in the future.
