Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Actor Jake Lloyd Diagnosed With Schizophrenia

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace actor Jake Lloyd has been in jail since June after police caught him in a high-speed chase in South Carolina.

On Saturday his mother Lisa told TMZ that the former child actor, best known as playing the young Anakin Skywalker in the 1999 blockbuster, suffers from schizophrenia.

His diagnosis caused authorities to transfer the 27-year-old star from a jail cell to a psychiatric facility.

According to the site, Lisa spoke with his son "last week" and can already see "an improvement in his personality".

Authorities haven't announced a date for his release, but the site added that "His family wants him to take his time to get healthy."

Jake Lloyd starred in Phantom Menace with Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson. The blockbuster made a total of $2 billion from worldwide box office receipts and rentals. He was 10-years-old in 1999.
