Star Wars: The Mandalorian Producer Reveals Why There Isn't Any Baby Yoda Merch Available Yet

Star Wars: The Mandalorian is quickly becoming a popular show on Disney+. Having been introduced towards the end of the pilot episode, Baby Yoda has stolen the spotlight of the show and is all the rage amongst Star Wars fans. But how come a Baby Yoda merch isn't available yet?

Merchandise is one of the huge factors that make up the Star Wars franchise. And since the baby is gaining a lot of attention, Disney could easily make the character a huge marketable product. Especially since a lot of fans would likely want a baby Yoda plushie or figure of some sort. That being said, showrunner Jon Favreau explains why there isn't any The Mandalorian merch yet, specifically, Baby Yoda's.

In a recent interview with Collider. Favreau revealed that the baby was, obviously, supposed to be kept as a secret prior to its premiere. "I have to thank Disney and Lucasfilm," he said. Because they "backed them up" in terms of how "the cat" easily "gets out of the bag" when it comes to merchandising and toy catalogs.

Since there are new twists and secrets that come out with each episode, Favreau "wanted to have it be that you had to watch it yourself." "That requires a lot of restraint from the people who are footing the bill," he admitted. They had to hold back on certain things to the public so they wouldn't know details about the series ahead of time. In the efforts to do so, part of it was to "hold back" on some of the merchandise and some of the characters.

In short, a Baby Yoda merch wasn't released prior to the show's premiere because details regarding the character would be thoroughly researched, hence spoiling the surprise as well as the story for many viewers.

For now, it looks like the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda still have a long way to go. There's no telling how the baby will be essential to the story, but we'll find out soon enough.
