THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN EPISODE 7. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Titled "The Reckoning," the seventh episode of The Mandalorian surely had a lot in store for the fans and has really saved the best for last. The episode featured Giancarlo Esposito's Maff Gideon who has been a highly-anticipated character even prior to the series' release. However, the character isn't the only thing introduced in the penultimate episode, because a new TIE fighter was featured as well.
Gideon pilots a TIE fighter that is quite different from the other ones featured in the franchise on-screen. The character's TIE fighter seems to be similar to the usual designs of a standard imperial starfighter. However, when the vehicle descended, it's solar wings collapse upon themselves and fold in half. This is actually a design that helps with the cockpit get close to the ground and is easier to exit from.
According to Phil Szostak, this particular TIE fighter was actually based on an unused 2013 design made by Lucasfilm executive creative director Doug Chiang. You can check out his tweet below.
Gideon's TIE fighter is sleek, powerful, and safe so it makes sense that it'd be used by a high-ranking official such as himself. When it comes to being in the middle of a battle, the vehicle could be used at an advantage.
