Star Wars: The Mandalorian Could Show Us the Beginnings of the First Order

Though they've been the main villains for the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, the origins of the First Order are still quite a mystery. Everyone is expecting answers to come out in The Rise of Skywalker, but it's likely we could get also get some reveals in Disney+'s The Mandalorian.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, director Dave Filoni explained, "This doesn't turn into a good guy universe because you blew up two Death Stars… You get that the Rebels won and they're trying to establish a Republic, but there's no way that could have set in for everybody all at once. You have in a Western where you're out on the frontier and there might be Washington and they might have some marshals, but sometimes good luck finding one."

Showrunner Jon Favreau also added, "What could happen in the 30 years between celebrating the defeat of the Empire and then the First Order? You come in on Episode VII, [the First Order are] not just starting out. They're pretty far along."

If you look at the expanded universe, it could even be said that the First Order was a result of one of Palpatine's contingency plans. This is hinted at in the campaign for Star Wars Battlefront II, but there are still a lot of blanks to fill in. With The Rise of Skywalker looking to end a nine-film saga, it's likely we could get a solid answer as to who the First Order is, as well as the origins of Snoke.

Going back to The Mandalorian though, I don't expect the First Order to fully form within the show, but it's likely we could get some hints at what Palpatine was planning in the case that he would find himself dead.

Catch The Mandalorian when it comes out on Disney+ which launches on Nov. 12. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters Dec. 20.
