Star Wars The Last Jedi: Rian Johnson Talks About Writing The Story

Though Star Wars The Force Awakens was a box office smash, a lot of people can't help but point out that the movie had too many similar story beats to A New Hope. Fans are hoping that Rian Johnson brings something new with The Last Jedi, and Johnson talks about his process when it came to writing the story for the film.

Appearing on the Star Wars Show, Johnson explains:

"Having been part of Star Wars fandom the past 40 years, I know how strongly people are going to have opinions about it…"

I was writing on my own but I moved up to San Francisco for a few months and every few weeks I would go in and sit down with Kiri Hart and her whole story group team and I would just put everything I was thinking up on the white board and just bounce it off everyone to see what everyone thought."

Having that kind of gut check not just for, ‘wait, no, don't do that,' but for, ‘Yeah, okay you can do that if that's interesting to you, take that path.'"

Having that permission from somebody, that had a lot to do with it. The first thing I kind of realized was that I have to trust my inner fan. If it resonates with me, I gotta trust that, and it's what George did with the original movies you know."

For now, fans are comparing The Last Jedi to The Empire Strikes Back, and though Johnson has admitted that the two movies do have their parallels, TLJ will be its own original story.

For now, the entire story of Star Wars: The Last Jedi is still a mystery. We don't have a full synopsis for the film yet, but we do know that Rey will be training with Luke for a part of the film, Kylo Ren will want his revenge on Rey for defeating him in the previous movie, and Finn will be a full-fledged recruit for the Resistance.

Catch Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theaters Dec. 15.
