Star Wars The Last Jedi: Mark Hamill on How Luke Would Have Used His Powers If He Had it His Way

It's no mystery that Mark Hamill didn't agree with the way Luke Skywalker was portrayed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the film is already canon, and no amount of internet campaigning is going to change that. J.J. Abrams originally thought that Skywalker didn't close himself to the Force in his early version of the trilogy, and Hamill talks about how Luke would have used his powers if he had it his way.

Talking to IGN, Hamill explains that he would have loved to see Luke go all out with his Jedi powers. He explains:

"J.J. said, ‘Oh and by the way I'll probably put in a couple of floating boulders to show the Force emanating from you, as strong as it is.' So I'm thinking for VIII, I'm going to have Force Lightning coming out of every orifice of my body. You know, lifting an eyebrow and toppling AT-ATs like dominoes. That would have been fun to be that powerful! Plus, I wouldn't have to do much. They wouldn't have to teach me choreography to do lightsaber duels. I'd just have to do this," *Hamill points across the room*, "and let the special effects guy do everything."

Of course, Luke still went all out with his powers in the movie, but not in a way that people were expecting. Luke's Force projection on Crait was exhausting enough to kill him, but it ultimately led to a bigger message being sent out to the galaxy—a message of Hope.

While a lot of people may argue about Luke's character arc, and how he should have stayed alive longer, I think Rian Johnson handled the character perfectly. Luke turned out very human, and showed audiences that even the best of us aren't completely perfect.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now available for digital and Blu-Ray.
