Star Wars: The Last Jedi Didn't Derail Any of J.J. Abrams' Plans for The Rise of Skywalker

After what was revealed in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, many felt that the film spat on the face of The Force Awakens and everything that it built up. Some also felt that it derailed some of the plans made for December's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker but it seems like that isn't the case. J.J. Abrams has set the record straight and claimed that nothing was really derailed.

Speaking with ET Canada, Abrams said that The Last Jedi actually let the creators continue telling the story that started with The Force Awakens. It was easy to see why some fans thought that The Last Jedi may have derailed its predecessor's momentum, considering how the film was about change and learning from the past (not "letting it die" as Kylo Ren wanted).

"The story that we're telling, the story that we started to conceive when we did The Force Awakens was allowed to continue. Episode VIII didn't really derail anything that we were thinking about."

It's gonna be interesting to see how Abrams will continue what Rian Johnson planted in The Last Jedi. The director was an active supporter of Johnson and what he did in The Last Jedi, which makes sense since he was still listed as a producer for the movie. Personally, as a fan of The Last Jedi, I'm more than excited to see what The Rise of Skywalker has planned.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be coming out on December 20. The Last Jedi is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
