Halloween is just around the corner, and Star Wars: The High Republic has decided now is the best time to give us a new look at the upcoming villains of the new era—The Drengir and the Nihil.

Writer Cavan Scott describes the Drengir, "As the Jedi struggle to deal with the aftermath of the Great Disaster, a new creeping terror rises from the ground beneath their feet. The Drengir are sentient plant-life who are looking to reap a terrible harvest across the galactic frontier."
While the Drengir is a lot closer to an animal/plant, the Jedi also have a new nemesis in the form of the Nihil, who are a more organized enemy. Light of the Jedi writer Charles Soule describes them:
"The Nihil are brutal, savage marauders, based in the Outer Rim… They're the stuff of nightmares, able to appear anywhere almost at will. They use bizarre, intimidating tactics — chemical weapons, poison — anything that might kill you, they'll use."
One Nihil member who has been put on the spotlight is Marchio Ro, who is said to hold wield ‘The Eye of the Nihil'. Soule continues, "The things that make the Nihil more than just a bunch of Outer Rim raiders all come from Marchion. He is also, in every sense, a bad guy."
While I'm suspecting that the Nihil are basically nihilists who are anti-establishment, I think the writers are going to make them out to be some kind of precursor to the Sith. Then again, that's just speculation on my part. I just think that if they're going to be the main adversary of this era, they better find a way to differentiate them from the scrappy bounty hunters that exist in every Star Wars timeline.
Star Wars: The High Republic launches on January 2021.
