Star Wars: The Force Awakens Crushes Jurassic World's Global Box Office Record

Yesterday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens made breaking box office records look easy, crushing just about every record on the books. The film didn't just make more than $100 Million in one day, it also earned the biggest opening of all time, earning an estimated $238 million for the weekend. But since the film hasn't been released in China and India yet, so its international opening wasn't as strong, and it seemed that there's one record it couldn't break: Jurassic World's $525 million global debut.

According to initial Sunday estiates,The Force Awakens would finish the weekend at $517 million globally, but Disney CEO Bob Iger told Bloomberg TV on Monday morning that the final total would be closer to $528 million. That means Jurassic World's record is gone, and we can now add "biggest global debut ever" to The Force Awakens' long list of box office achievements.

Iger said that final numbers are still being counted, but the domestic total should be closer to $247 million, and the international total could also be significantly higher. "It's bigger than big," Iger told Bloomberg. "It's bigger than we thought it would be yesterday, as a matter of fact."

The Force Awakens' accomplishment is impressive because its international distribution wasn't as wide as Jurassic World, which got $100 million of its global debut from China. J.J. Abrams' film won't be released there until January 9. And it will be released in India on Dec. 24, 2015.
