Sam Witwer is a huge Star Wars fan in case you haven't noticed. The actor has voiced Darth Maul for The Clone Wars, Rebels, and even Solo of all things. He also lent his face and voice for the video game character Starkiller from Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and the beautiful but way too easy sequel The Force Unleashed II. Naturally, Witwer had some things to say about The Rise of Skywalker.
We already saw him share his thoughts on Rian Johnson's controversial The Last Jedi, thinking that the director didn't do his Star Wars homework before making the sequel. Well, he was just as harsh to The Rise of Skywalker, burying the movie for needing a finale where Palpatine is killed by Force Lightning when Return of the Jedi had Darth Vader choosing his son over the Dark Side, which is way better.
"It's um... look, if you like it, awesome. It's not as meaningful to me because I can't really reconcile that mythology with George's. But that's just my opinion, you know? My personal is take is I think a Star Wars where the moral of the story is 'throw down your weapon, don't hurt your family, love or fear.'"
Though Witwer has a point, it's worth noting that George Lucas directed Revenge of the Sith, which had Obi-Wan slash Anakin while in midair so that his body could melt into its odd Darth Vader state. Honestly, the Star Wars franchise is far from perfect and it's why fans are really attached to the tie-in material and spin-off animated shows like The Clone Wars, which seem to like continuity and character development more than most of the movies.
Fans can hear Witwer as Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels on Disney+.
