Warning: This article contains spoilers for the latest issue of Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren by Charles Soule, Will Sliney, Travis Lanham, and Guru-eFX.
Like him or not, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) has been one of the most complex characters in Disney's sequel trilogy. The neglected child of two of the most important individuals in the Rebellion, Ben Solo finds himself turning to the Dark Side after being swayed by Snoke. During the sequel trilogy, Star Wars fans see the wayward son of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) sway between the light side and the Dark Side.
Kylo Ren also had a huge obsession with Darth Vader, something which never really went away even after he became the Supreme Leader in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The character's obsession with his grandfather has always been a major point of interest, and now, thanks to Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #2, we know why Ben Solo revered the Sith Lord so much.
According to the comic (via CBR.com), the main reason why Kylo Ren really respected Anakin was because of the character's own fall to the Dark Side. Like Kylo Ren, Anakin Skywalker had been tired of being underestimated by the Jedi Council. He wanted agency, and this desire eventually led him to a path towards the Dark Side. Ben felt angry in the same way – his parents were negligent, and Luke (Mark Hamill) wouldn't let Ben explore on his own.
Kylo Ren eventually saw himself as a copy of Darth Vader, and that lead him to worship his grandfather.
It's a really interesting reveal, one that adds to the complexity of the character.
Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #2 is available for purchase in comic book shops and stores online.
