Star Wars Reveals The Empire’s Real Meaning Of Han Solo’s Last Name

While some Star Wars fans had a good chuckle at how Solo: A Star Wars Story revealed the origin of Han's family name, others felt a bit disappointed by the throwaway backstory. Luckily, it seems like a new Star Wars comic book gives us the deets on what Solo's name really means to the Empire.

Thanks to Leonard Kirk and Robbie Thompson's newest Star Wars comic book series, Han Solo: Imperial Cadet (via Screen Rant), fans get to see Han's time with the Empire and what his name really meant to the Imperial Navy. Jumping three years after Han's Corellian escape in Solo: A Star Wars Story, the comic book shows us Han being washed out of the Imperial Navy. While the soon-to-be-iconic-smuggler keeps the smart mouth he's had ever since he was a punk on his home planet, his response to Imperial authority leads to the punishment of his entire squad – which they of course pass back to Han.

It's here fans get to know why the Empire REALLY named Han as "Solo."

Apparently, the Empire didn't give Han his surname as a placeholder but as a brand marking him as a commoner, a person without any people. While this fits with the origin story that Solo: A Star Wars Story gave Han during the opening arc of the film, it also adds a bit of shade, showing that the Empire branded the character as a nobody – a "scumrat."

It's definitely an interesting detail that helps add some depth to an origin that some have considered trite and hackneyed.

What do you think of this new detail? How about the origin of Han's family name? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
