Star Wars: Natalie Portman Says Prequel Trilogy Backlash 'Was A Bummer'

It's been a long time since the Star Wars prequel trilogy premiered yet the stars of the films continue to be haunted by backlash they received. For instance, Natalie Portman admits that it was difficult to face all the negative reactions to the movies.

Portman discussed her lengthy career with Empire so it's no surprise that the Star Wars prequels had to be mentioned. The Black Swan actress was initially thrilled to play Padmé Amidala but confessed that she was bothered by the backlash.

"It was hard," Portman said. "It was a bummer because it felt like people were so excited about new ones and then to have people feel disappointed. Also to be at an age that I didn't really understand that's kind of the nature of the beast. When something has that much anticipation it can almost only disappoint."

It may have disappointed people in the past but the Star Wars prequels have earned the respect of fans. You just need to look at the thousands of memes scattered across social media. Interestingly, Portman is somehow aware of this.

"With the perspective of time, it's been re-evaluated by a lot of people who actually really love them now," she said. "There's a very avid group of people who think they're the best ones now! I don't have enough perspective to weigh in."

We're still not sure if Portman might consider reprising her role as Padme. However, she somehow reappeared as Jane Foster in Avengers: Endgame. It was only a brief appearance but there is little doubt that Portman will continue to impress us with her performances in the future.
