Star Wars: Maul Almost Had Terrifying New Look In Solo

Star Wars fans are already familiar with Darth Maul's iconic look that includes a black face paint and multiple horns. However, the concept art for Solo: A Star Wars Story reveals that Maul almost got a new look in the 2018 movie.

The Maul concept art was originally posted by the official Star Wars Twitter page but has since been retweeted by Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak with some interesting details. Check it out below.

As Szostak confirmed, the concept art was actually created by Solo artist Jake Lunt Davies and was actually inspired by the works of Iain McCaig, who came up with Maul's design in The Phantom Menace. McCaig had originally envisioned Maul with a blue zombie with red ribbons across his face but the look had terrified Star Wars creator George Lucas.

So why did Davies find inspiration in a rejected artwork by McCaig? It's possible that Solo almost reintroduced Maul with an edgy new haircut. However, it's highly unlikely considering that Maul's final look is hard to top. Nevertheless, it looks like most of us will be losing sleep tonight after seeing Davies' design.

Maul is expected to play a major role in the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2020. In addition to that, there are speculations that he will show up again in the planned Obi-Wan Kenobi series which will bring back Ewan McGregor as the Jedi Master. However, this is still based on theory so it's best to manage your Maul-obsessed expectations.
