Star Wars: Mark Hamill Addresses A New Hope Trash Compactor Scene Rumor

We all know Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films but he's also an awesome social media personality who loves interacting with his fans. So it's interesting that Hamill finally decided to address a certain rumor about what happened behind the scenes while he was filming the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope.

A fan decided to reach out to Hamill regarding a certain scene in A New Hope where Luke, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca were all trapped in a trash compactor. "I've long heard the trash compactor scene contained all real trash and that you blew a blood vessel in your eye trying to hold your breath. Is this true??" the fan asked on Twitter. Hamill promptly responded that the rumor is only partly true. Take a look at his tweet below.

"I purposely made myself red-faced for a strangulated look, causing a blood vessel in my eye to burst. Afterwards-they had to shoot carefully to hide it until I healed. George told me I should've asked him 1st because w/ the lighting & red-filters it made no difference," Hamill wrote, adding the hashtag #TrueStory. However, he didn't address the part where the cast was tossed into a set full of trash.

Unfortunately, all that effort to look strangulated didn't work out as Hamill planned. If you watch the scene closely, you can't even tell if Luke is red-faced (or has a burst blood vessel in his eye) as he struggles.

We're certainly hoping that Hamill doesn't try this again in the future. Hopefully, he won't need to look red-faced in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Hamill returns as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which hits theaters on December 20.
