The Star Wars franchise is ready to end its big-screen drought after being plagued with a stagnant movie slate. That's not to say that Lucasfilm has been slacking off over the last three years. In fact, since late 2020, several film projects were already confirmed to be in development.

Earlier this month, we learned that the next Star Wars movie will mark the return of Daisy Ridley to the franchise that made her a household name in Hollywood. Naturally, the Rey Skywalker actor's re-emergence received a mixed reaction from fans, and for good reason.

Of course, the sequel trilogy left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans, and the idea that its main character will once again be at the galaxy's forefront in the upcoming "Jedi Order" film is something not everyone is ready for.

Although initial reports confirmed that the next film helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy would take place post-sequel trilogy, The Hot Mic podcast reports that Ridley wasn't always meant to lead the project.

In fact, before abandoning the film, writer Damon Lindelof reportedly had another actor in mind whom he wanted to top bill the project. Previous rumors even pointed to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's involvement in the film.

While it would have been nice to see a new face lead the franchise, Rey's return makes absolute sense, especially from a creative standpoint. It also allows Lucasfilm to right the wrongs of the sequels and I'm pretty sure that's what they're after — redemption.

Personally, I have no issues with Rey's return and I just wish her writing would be better this time around. The same thing can be said for other sequel trilogy characters who could return down the line.

Star Wars' return to the big screen is expected to happen sometime in 2025.
