The future of the Star Wars universe remains a huge mystery to a lot of fans and if you've been following the franchise post-Skywalker saga, you're very much aware that Disney and Lucasfilm have shifted their focus momentarily to stories taking place in different eras from the past.

Well, it appears that the trend will continue for future live-action projects. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy just teased what the next couple of years has in store for the franchise's live-action universe, which might involve an ongoing fan-favorite story.

The new book The Art of Star Wars: The High Republic: (Volume One) teases (via The Direct) that its ever-expanding story could end up jumping from the pages of the novel and comics to the small or big screen. "If [the High Republic] gamble succeeded, the story anchoring the new interconnected multimedia initiative stood to open up new storytelling opportunities beyond the page, allowing publishing to evolve into an incubator for new characters and era that could later appear in games or on screen, a role reversal for the department typically tasked with sustaining interest between tentpole projects and big-screen movies that nevertheless honored the genesis of all stories in film, games, and television."

A project centered on the High Republic era would be perfect for the Disney+ platform. Given how Lucasfilm is continuously expanding the universe via the streaming service, the idea of it coming to fruition doesn't seem too farfetched. Of course, there's a good chance it could be adapted into a film, but considering how stagnant the Star Wars movie slate is, I don't see it happening.

Meanwhile, you can get your Star Wars fix — from movies to TV shows exclusively on Disney+.
