Star Wars Legend Mark Hamill Promises Not To Talk About The Movies After TLJ Backlash

Star Wars fans might be hoping to hear more news about Star Wars: Episode IX now that the movie is approaching its release, but Mark Hamill swears he's going to keep his lips sealed. Sure, the Star Wars legend might love pulling pranks on the Star Wars fanbase like the joker that he is (pun intended), but Hamill says that he doesn't want to get in trouble after the comments he gave about Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Hamill just recently spoke with Den of Geek when the publication visited the set of the new Knightfall television series. During the interview, the Star Wars actor revealed that he had vowed to stop talking about upcoming Star Wars movies.

Before the release of The Last Jedi Hamill had previously expressed dislike for Luke Skywalker's narrative arc and in the end, his comments landed him in a whole lot of trouble.

"The thing is," Hamill said, "Luke changed so much between the first trilogy and the last trilogy. I got myself into trouble [by stating those opinions]. I made a vow – I said that I'm not going to talk about the movies anymore because I think it's important for the audience to see them."

Obviously, actors opinions do influence the way fans see films. Though Hamill eventually changed his mind about Luke in The Last Jedi, Star Wars fans used his comments to back their opinions against the film adding to the divisiveness of the sequel trilogy entry.

"My problem was, I wasn't dealing with social media back then, where you say something and it goes around the world in 24 hours! If I were to answer your questions on paper, I'd think: 'Oh, that sounds a little strong, or, I shouldn't say this.'" Hamill admitted, "But I have a tendency just to talk and talk and talk, and you can cherry-pick. You know, I'll be reading something, and say, 'What moron said this?', and then realize, 'Oh, it's me.' They can take selective comments you've made out of context and use it to support their argument: 'See, Mark hated Star Wars!' Did I?"

Hamill's been trying his best to keep Episode IX's secrets, though the Star Wars legend can't help but make fun of the fanbase every now and then.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
