Peter Mayhew may have reprised his role of Chewbacca in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but the role has since been taken over by a younger actor Joonas Suotamo. With Episode IX having officially wrapped production, it's likely we won't be seeing Chewie return to the big screen for a while. In a recent IG post from Suotamo, he talks a bit about the gripes of playing cinema's favorite Wookiee.
While Solo: A Star Wars Story was clearly setting up for a sequel, the movie's underperformance in cinemas have lead to Lucasfilm reconsidering their anthology films moving forward. Suotamo was likely to make his reappearance in Solo 2, but until we get a green light that the movie is actually happening, we have no idea when we should expect another appearance from Chewbacca.
There have been rumors going around that Lucasfilm is working on making the follow-up to Solo a limited series instead, so it's likely we'll see Chewie return then. While I'm up for more stories in the realm of the smugglers and bounty hunters, I kind of wish that they kept to the spectacle of the films.
I'll just wait and see how Star Wars: The Mandalorian goes before I get excited about any more live-action series set in a galaxy far far away.
For now, expect a return for Chewie in Star Wars Episode IX which comes out Dec. 20. Fans have been eagerly awaiting the teaser since 2019 started, but it looks like we'll have to wait until Celebration in April before we get our first look.
