Aside from Arrowverse's upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earth's television event, there hasn't been any sort of major DC Extended Universe announcement for fans to look forward to with Warner Brothers sitting out this year's San Diego Comic-Con International. However, it seems like new reports reveal that Star Trek and Star Wars director J.J. Abrams may very well be set to work on new movies for Green Lantern and Superman.
Last month, word came out that Warner Brothers was trying to woo Abrams for a mega-production deal that could amount to $500 million. Now, according to a report by Cosmic Book News, one of the biggest reasons why Abrams was brought into the studio was so that the director could work on DCEU films for both Superman and for Green Lantern.
While the site has yet to provide material confirmation of this report, fans do know that Abrams was actually attached to WB's Superman: Flyby project years ago, so it doesn't sound farfetched that the filmmaker would want to join the DCEU.
Cosmic Book News' sources also claim that WB's decision to pass up Superman star Henry Cavill and Mission Impossible director Chris McQuarrie's pitch for Man of Steel 2 was affected by Abrams plans for a Superman movie. Apparently, the Star Wars director's plans are being preferred by WB.
Of course, as with any rumor, we advise fans to take this report with a grain of salt. Warner Brothers hasn't made any announcements about what it plans to do with Superman or with Batman just yet – the studio's been busy with its surefire winning franchises like Wonder Woman and Aquaman. As exciting as the idea of a J.J. Abrams Superman film is, we'll just have to cross our fingers and wait and see.
