Star Wars: J.J. Abrams Comments on George Lucas' Dissatisfaction with Sequel Trilogy

It seems like anyone who's anyone in the Star Wars franchise has something to say about Disney CEO Bob Iger's revelation that George Lucas is unhappy with the sequel trilogy. Now Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams has commented on the news.

Abrams recently spoke to Rolling Stone where he was asked how he feels about Lucas being dissatisfied with the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Not surprisingly, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director had nothing but praise for Lucas. He also stated that he understood why the Star Wars creator reacted the way that he did.

"I've only had gratitude for George," Abrams said. "It's probably a complicated thing for him. To decide you're going to sell this thing that you created, that was your baby, to anyone — that must be more complicated than signing a check and smiling about it. But he's been incredibly gracious. He's been super-generous."

Abrams also shared that Lucas was involved in how the sequel trilogy would be developed. In addition to that, Abrams was truly "grateful" that Lucas was "really gracious" with them. Nevertheless, Abrams also pointed out that he would have been very pleased if Lucas loved Episode VII.

"Do I wish that [Force Awakens] had been his favorite movie of all time? Yes, I only wanted to do well by him. I would just say that I have nothing but profound respect for the guy and am still truly, even more so now, working on these movies in awe of what he created," he said.

Perhaps it isn't too late for Abrams. After all, there's still a chance that Lucas will enjoy The Rise of Skywalker, right? We'll find out soon enough if the final film in the Skywalker Saga will please the Star Wars creator.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters on December 20.
