Star Wars: J.J. Abrams Throws Shade at Rian Johnson for The Last Jedi 'Choices'

It's no secret that most fans weren't pleased with what Rian Johnson has done with Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But does J.J. Abrams agree with these people? The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director has subtly thrown some shade at Johnson about the Knives Out filmmaker's "choices" with Episode VIII.

Abrams recently spoke to Rolling Stone about his upcoming Star Wars film but he also looked back at how Johnson handled The Last Jedi. For instance, Abrams had a surprising reaction to Johnson's initial plans for Episode VIII.

"When I read his first draft, it made me laugh because I saw that was his take and his voice," Abrams admitted. "I got to watch cuts of the movie as he was working on it, as an audience member."

We're assuming that Abrams got a chuckle out of Snoke being killed off although he was being established as the new Big Bad. Nevertheless, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director pointed out that he understood why Johnson decided to take major risks with The Last Jedi.

"I appreciated the choices he made as a filmmaker that would probably be very different from the choices that I would have made. Just as he would have made different choices if he had made Episode VII," Abrams said.

It might sound like Abrams is throwing some shade at Johnson but we're just glad that the two aren't arguing about the direction that the sequel trilogy is supposed to take.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters on December 20. Johnson's new Star Wars trilogy has not yet been given an official release date.
