We already know that there were a lot of theories about what will happen in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, there was a leaked scene that seemed like a sure thing but wasn't included in the theatrical cut. This sequence was supposed to feature an interesting new alien and has been called the Eye of Webbish Bog scene. So what exactly happened to the scene?
Back in 2019, details about the scene were leaked on the internet and it had people interested. The sequence was supposed to feature a strange spider-like alien perched on top of a giant infant's head. Amazingly, this leak was the real thing as The Rise of Skywalker creature and special make-up effects creative supervisor Neal Scanlan confirmed to Collider that the entire sequence was shot. But why was it deleted in the first place?
"I think it maybe was too lengthy an explanation for something that [director J.J. Abrams] was able to explain in the movie much quicker, eventually," Scanlan said. "J.J.'s movies move very quickly don't they, and it was all part of Kylo Ren's journey and I think he just felt that there was too much time being spent on something which he explained much quicker. So that's all it was, really."
It's rather unfortunate that Scanlan and his team worked hard on the sequence only to have it deleted from the theatrical cut. Nevertheless, Scanlan stated that this is just part of the movie-making process.
"Run time is always my biggest fear on any movie. So much of what we do, so much of what we shoot — and I'm sure this is the same for every department — you invest so much time and love in it and you hope it'll make the final cut, but it doesn't always do that because the movie would be four hours long. Which would be great!" he said with a laugh.
So is there any chance we'll see the deleted scene? Unfortunately, there are no deleted scenes in the Rise of Skywalker's home release. Nevertheless, you can read about the Eye of Webbish Bog scene in the film's novelization.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be available on digital on March 17 and on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 31
