Star Wars’ Gwendoline Christie Talks About Captain Phasma’s Possible Return

Star Wars’ Gwendoline Christie addresses whether she would be returning as Captain Phasma. Christie’s Captain Phasma first appeared in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

A lot of fans were disappointed with Captain Phasma due to her lacking screen time in the film. This criticism carried on to Star Wars: Episode VII - The Last Jedi, which barely featured Christie’s Captain Phasma and seemingly killed her off. After the two films were released, Captain Phasma accumulated over three minutes and thirty seconds of total screen time.

A lot of fans criticized the trilogy’s use of the Captain Phasma character, especially after she was used to hype the film prior to the release of The Force Awakens. However, Captain Phasma received a lot more attention in written media than in any film that featured her. Star Wars: Phasma, a novel written by Delilah S. Dawson, tells Phasma’s backstory while the well-known four-part comic book series, Star Wars: Captain Phasma, centers around her time after the events of The Force Awakens, explaining how she was able to escape from Starkiller base before it was destroyed.

In a recent interview with Empire, Christie admitted that she would love to reprise her role as Captain Phasma in the Star Wars universe. She also claims to have never read any of the comics that explore her character in more detail, but she acknowledges that there was something about Captain Phasma that attracted a lot of audiences and she would like to return to that once more.

“I haven't read the comics but, I mean, it’s Star Wars! I would absolutely love that.” Christie said during the interview. “There was a template for a character that people got really excited about. It would be smashing if they felt that it was worthwhile to explore, along with some fabulous action.”

Since the completion of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, there have been a lot of complaints and criticism including how Captain Phasma was wasted within the saga. Although the directors hyped the character, she was given very little screen time in both films. Although The Last Jedi gave her a fight scene, she was quickly killed off. Adapting Captain Phasma’s popular comic book series or exploring her journey could be a way to bring Christie back into the Star Wars franchise.
