Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set to come out next week, and for some reason, members of the cast (and even J.J. Abrams himself) have been making comments about what they thought was wrong with The Last Jedi. While a lot of people who hated the film are seeing it as some form of validation, some fans are suspecting that it's actually a PR tactic aimed specifically to appease the haters.
It's weird because, up until recently, Abrams had been vocal about his support for The Last Jedi, and had even said he loved Johnson's take compared to his original plan. Kelly Lawler on Twitter speculates:
Here are some other takes:
With all the hate that came out after The Last Jedi, and the underperformance of Solo, I can imagine that Lucasfilm is trying their best to get everyone, especially the haters, to check out The Rise of Skywalker. While a lot of people are starting to feel sorry for Rian Johnson, I have a feeling that he's kind of in on the plan already. After all, he's still on social media after the backlash of TLJ, so I imagine some public comments made from the cast and crew aren't going to faze him, seeing as they are likely far from genuine.
Personally I kind of don't like this pandering to fanboy haters because they are probably the same toxic fans that bullied Kelly Marie Tran and Daisy Ridley off social media. That kind of attitude, to me, doesn't deserve to be rewarded, but if it gets people in the seats, then I guess it's good enough for Disney? That's just my take.
For now, catch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in theaters Dec. 20.
