Star Wars petitions are commonplace, however, it seems like there's a strange petition asking for the installation of a bronze statue of Obi-Wan Kenobi on top of Ben Nevis and it's gaining a lot of traction online.
The petition may have started as an April Fool's Day joke, however, it seems like it's managed to arrest attention for support and backing. Star Wars fans are now actively demanding a life-sized sculpture of Crieff-born Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi be placed on top of the highest mountain in the British Isles, Ben Nevis. The petition is literally asking the John Muir Trust conservation charity to place Obi-Wan Kenobi on "high ground."
"Ewan McGregor is a phenomenal actor and is considered one of Scotland's best. Appearing in countless films for over two decades, Ewan has an impressive filmography. With his most iconic role being that of Obi-Wan Kenobi from George Lucas' Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Regardless of what you think of the Prequel Trilogy, most people will say that Obi-Wan was done brilliantly. He made Obi-Wan Kenobi the popular character he is today. And I think he deserves something for it," writes the petition creator, Conner Heggie.
According to the Star Wars fan, the statue of Obi-Wan would help Scotland's economy, encouraging science fiction fans to visit the mountain and bring revenue to the region. An estimated 100,000 people ascend Ben Nevis every year, but with an Obi-Wan Kenobi statue on the mountain, Heggie believes that the number would significantly increase.
It's a hilarious campaign, really, but Star Wars fans are taking the petition seriously. More than 20,000 people have signed their names – just a few more days and the petition may be able to reach its 25,000 goal.
