Star Wars Fans Bash Marvel Jokes in The Rise of Skywalker

Levity has always been an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while Marvel's humor works well for comic book movies like Thor: Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars fans find that it doesn't really fit in Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have been a commercial and critical success for Lucasfilm, however, one of the fanbase's complaints about the movie was the allegedly unnecessary jokes that Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) made at the start of the film.

Despite criticism against jokes that seem to echo Marvel humor, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker seems to employ the same kind of levity in a brand new clip released online.

Taking to Twitter, Lucasfilm decided to release a brand new clip offering a new look at the Resistance's fight against the First Order in The Rise of Skywalker. Everything seems to be in order – rebels on the run, blaster fire, and stormtroopers hot in pursuit of the Resistance Fighters. However, a cringey line makes its way into the sequence – seeing jet troopers shoot into the air, C-3PO notes that stormtroopers "fly now," something which Finn (John Boyega) and Poe respond to in surprise.

J.J. Abrams might have meant the scene as a joke, but fans can't seem to take the interaction seriously. Star Wars fans commenting on the released footage note that Disney's canon has already confirmed that Poe has seen stormtroopers fly. It also seems ridiculous that a former stormtrooper like Finn would be caught off guard by the jet troupers as well. The joke doesn't really fit with Star Wars canon.

We're hoping that there aren't too many mistakes like these in Episode IX.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
