Star Wars: Episode IX’s J.J. Abrams Speaks Up About Dark Side Rey

Star Wars fans went wild when Lucasfilm released its brand new teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker during Disney's D23 Expo last month. Not only did the trailer feature the big battle between Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), but it also revealed a clip where Rey is dressed in dark robes, holding a double-bladed lightsaber much like a Sith would.

For the past few weeks, there has been a whole lot of speculation whether Rey would really turn to the Dark Side or whether the Star Wars twist was simply a vision seen by Kylo Ren. Speaking in an interview with Empire, The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams was asked about Dark Rey, and though the filmmaker would rather keep the truth behind Dark Side Rey a secret, he can't help tease fans that there are going to be a lot of unexpected things happening in the film.

"I'd rather let that one lie," he told the entertainment news outlet, "But I will say that the movie has a number of things that you wouldn't expect to have happen and that you wouldn't expect certain characters to do."

According to Abrams, fans should expect a few twists and turns in Episode IX, including the possibility of Rey turning to the Dark Side.

"There are surprises along the way," the filmmaker added, "And that's one of them."

Could Rey really become a Sith in The Rise of Skywalker? Or could this be a ruse by Lucasfilm?

Let's wait and see.
