Star Wars: Episode IX’s Dominic Monaghan Hints At The Big Role He’s Playing In The Film

Lucasfilm might be trying its best to keep the secrets of Star Wars: Episode IX under wraps, but with the film in the middle of production, a few tidbits about the third and final installment in the studio's sequel trilogy continue to make its way online.

While most of this leaked information comes from set videos and photos that make their way to the internet, sometimes the hints come from Episode IX's actors themselves – and that includes Dominic Monaghan, one of the new faces who'll be appearing in the film next year.

Speaking in an interview with the hosts of the Distraction Pieces podcast (via Express), Monaghan hinted that his role in Episode IX could turn out to be quite significant to the film, saying that Star Wars director J.J. Abrams had actually crafted the perfect part for him.

"JJ [Abrams] is a friend of mine and he said to me that at some point I'd get the opportunity to read the script," the actor explained. "[He told me] ‘just be aware of the fact that there are massive sequences in Act 2, there are massive sequences in Act 3 but because we're shooting Act 1 first, I've put you in there and you seem to not be around as much in Act 2 and Act 3 but that's because that's what we're doing first so I want you here, I want you invested."

While Monaghan is new to the Star Wars franchise, the English actor's had a lot of experience working on big blockbuster movies. Not only did Monaghan appear in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he also played the role of "Merry" Brandybuck in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

During his interview with the podcast, the Episode IX star couldn't help but gush about his work on the movie, saying that Abrams had provided him with an amazing script.

"(Abrams said)‘So read the script but just know there won't be long until there'll be a re-draft of those things and we'll see you a little bit more'," the actor continued."So I read it, and the script is amazing and obviously, there isn't a lot I can say.."

Though Monaghan doesn't give away anything specific, it seems like Star Wars fans are going to have to look out for his character in Star Wars: Episode IX. Though we're not entirely crossing out the possibility of Monaghan's character being part of the Dark Side, it's very likely that we'll see the Lord of the Rings star with the Resistance, potentially playing a key role in the organization. That or he'll be one of those outside both factions. Let's wait and see.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits cinemas December 20, 2019.
