J.J. Abrams has just confirmed that Star Wars: Episode IX has finished principal photography with a single photo showing actors Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac hugging on the set. It's an emotional image but it may have also confirmed that the trilogy is going back to a major Star Wars: The Force Awakens location.
In case you missed it, here's Abrams' post on Twitter.
At first glance, the photo looks like it was taken from the set of The Force Awakens. After all, it shows Ridley wearing a costume similar to what Rey wore in TFA and her hair is even made up the same way. However, it's clearly a new photo because Boyega and Isaac's costume are completely different. Nevertheless, fans believe that this particular set has brought the actors back to Jakku.
The return to Jakku would be a major surprise considering that Rey and Finn had already abandoned the idea of going back to the desert planet. Nevertheless, it's still possible that the two may have needed to fly back to Rey's home for a new mission.
But is it possible that the set actually depicts a different planet we have already encountered? Some believe it could be Tatooine. Although it's unclear why Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron would go to Luke Skywalker's old planet, it could be an interesting way to tie up the Skywalker Saga.
Jakku and Tatooine are not the only possibilities right now. There are speculations that this is a completely new desert planet. Will the heroes travel to a new location to recruit more people to the Resistance or are they here to face Kylo Ren and the First Order? Hopefully, the truth will be revealed when Episode IX finally hits theaters later this year.
Star Wars: Episode IX will hit theaters on December 20.
