Many fans were disappointed to discover in Star Wars: The Last Jedi that Rey's parents were nobodies, despite her strong connection to the Force. A lot of people hate the direction that Rian Johnson took the franchise in the film to the point they want the whole film redone. Well, they might get the next best thing.

Johnson was asked in an interview with MTV News about the possibility of Star Wars: Episode IX retconning the parentage of Daisy Ridley's character. The filmmaker appears to be cool with it, revealing that he's had "a couple of conversations" with J.J. Abrams, who's directing the trilogy capper.

"But I've actually really enjoyed sitting back waiting to get my popcorn opening day and see how the thing turns out. I cannot wait," he said.

"Like I said, I want to let go of all my expectations, I want to sit back, I want to be entertained. I want to be surprised. I want to be thrilled. I want him to do stuff that I wasn't expecting him to do and just go along for the ride. For me, that's why I go to the movies," he went on to say.

In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren claimed that Rey's parents were filthy junk traders who sold her for drinking money. People speculated that he may have just said that to convince her to join him and that he wasn't telling the truth.

The revelation was a major deviation from what the franchise has established and has indeed "subverted expectations" about the character, who has been speculated to be a descendant of Obi-Wan, Luke, or even Palpatine.

While it is unknown what Star Wars: Episode IX has in store and what Abrams has planned, the hope is that the final film in the sequel trilogy will unite fans as the franchise concludes the Skywalker saga. Hopefully, we'll get a glimpse of the film at Star Wars Celebration Chicago next week.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits cinemas December 20.
