Star Wars: Episode IX Star Adam Driver Talks About Kylo And Rey’s Relationship

Star Wars: The Last Jedi saw a connection between Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley). Though the two eventually decided to take different paths, the Jakku orphan and the estranged son of Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) and Han (Harrison Ford) left Star Wars fans longing to see more of their connection.

Speaking in an interview with Vanity Fair, Driver talks about that bond between the two characters and how fans are going to see it evolve in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

"... Then he had been forging this maybe-bond with Rey, and it kind of ends with the question in the air: is he going to pursue that relationship, or when the door of her ship goes up, does that also close that camaraderie that they were maybe forming?" Driver said.

We're definitely going to see their relationship change in The Rise of Skywalker. Though many might be hoping that Kylo Ren finds his way back to the light, we might not be able to see that same kind of bond and hope that the two shared in The Last Jedi. From the look of the first teaser of the upcoming Star Wars film, the two are going to meet at opposite ends of the Force yet again.

"How do you form friendships out of that?" Driver said. "How do you understand the weight of that? And if there's no one around you guiding you, or articulating things the right way … it can easily go awry."

Of course there's still some hope that Kylo Ren finds his own redemption. We'll just have to wait and see.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
