Star Wars: Episode IX Rumor Suggests Palpatine Possessing Kylo Ren’s Body In Final Battle

Last month, Lucasfilm released the very first trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX, revealing the film's official title, and the return of the iconic villain, Emperor Palpatine. Ever since then, multiple theories regarding Darth Sidious involvement in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker have started circulating online. Now, one of the most recent theories suggest that director J.J. Abrams might actually use Palpatine in a big fight sequence together with Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

According to a report by Making Star Wars, a new Rise of Skywalker theory suggests a sequence where fans are going to see Emperor Palpatine trying to resurrect himself by taking over the body of another – the rumored dark side acolyte reportedly being played by Doctor Who alum Matt Smith.

The rumor also suggests that Palpatine, through the body of Smith, is going to go on a duel with both Rey and Ren. The estranged son of Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) manages to kill Palpatine's host body. When he does, the Sith Lord attempts at possessing Kylo Ren, forcing Ben Solo to struggle with the Dark Side inside him. To protect Rey, Kylo returns to the light, sacrificing himself to hinder Palpatine's resurrection.

It's an interesting theory – though the idea of Snoke possessing bodies can be a bit farfetched. It's a little bit hard to believe that J.J. Abrams might go along with an idea as wild as this. But who knows. The expanded universe did explore Dark Side possession.

Let's just wait and see what happens.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywallker premieres December 20, 2019.
