Yesterday, Disney dropped a new press release announcing the release dates for the Star Wars films that are set to follow the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. According to the announcement, Star Wars fans would be getting their next Star Wars film in 2022 – three years after the release of The Rise of Skywalker. After that, Disney would release another Star Wars film in 2024, and then in 2026.
As exciting as the release date announcement is, one of the bigger question circulating on social media is what kind of films these might be, and who might direct these projects. Could these films be part of the trilogy set under Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff? Or could these films be part of the trilogy set under Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson?
ABC had the same questions in mind, and correspondent Clayton Sandell confirmed that Lucasfilm wasn't going to reveal which trilogy the projects scheduled for 2022, 2024, and 2026 would be under.
"We asked, but Lucasfilm is not yet saying if the new [Star Wars] films planned for 2022, 2024 and 2026 are part of the previously-announced Rian Johnson trilogy or the series from Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss," the correspondent wrote on a post on Twitter.
While it's a bit disappointing that Lucasfilm is holding back information regarding these future films, the studio may have marketing plans for these movies. That or the announcement might actually affect Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Let's wait and see.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 20, 2019.
