Star Wars: Episode IX Might Reveal Rey's Shocking Connection To Prequel Trilogy Character

We already know that Rey's parents aren't particularly special, thanks to Kylo Ren's shocking revelation in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Nevertheless, is it possible that the slave girl from Jakku is actually connected to an often forgotten character from the prequel trilogy? The truth could finally be revealed in Star Wars: Episode IX.

Fans have long theorized about Rey's similarities to Anakin Skywalker, who was born in a desert planet and became a slave due to poverty. However, a new theory suggests that the similarity is key and could be proof of her connection to someone who was just as important in the prequel trilogy. Could Rey be related to Shmi Skywalker?

The theory that was posted on Reddit suggests that Rey's familial connection to Shmi can easily be explained. After all, not much is known about Anakin's mother other than that she ended up on a desert planet and presumably became a slave due to poverty. The post purports that Shmi may have had siblings who suffered similar fates and had descendants who somehow ended up having to sell their daughter to become a slave as well.

It's an interesting theory considering that Shmi's backstory has never been explored although she is the reason why the whole Skywalker Saga started in the first place. It would be great if we could finally learn more about Shmi in Episode IX.

So is it possible that Shmi is actually Rey's great-great aunt? It's certainly plausible. However, it is important to stress that these are all based on theory so it's best to take it with a grain of salt.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20.
