People were understandably pleased when Keri Russell was announced to join the cast of Star Wars: Episode IX. The casting even resulted in speculations that the star of The Americans will portray Rey's estranged mother. However, a new leak may have revealed that Russell's character will actually be connected to Luke Skywalker.
The new leak offers some details from the Episode IX set, even teasing at Russell's character design. It is revealed that the actor's costume consists of black robes similar to those worn by the Knights of Ren.
So could this mean that Russell is playing one of the former students who joined Kylo Ren after Luke Skywalker's Jedi temple was destroyed? The set designs do feature the character holding a lightsaber (not ignited) and standing alongside Kylo.
It gets even more interesting. According to the leak, the code name of Russell's character is "Mara."
The name certainly means something to Star Wars ExpandedUniverse fans. In the EU, Mara Jade is Luke's wife and mother to his son Ben Skywalker. Although both characters have yet to be introduced in the trilogy films, there is a possibility that she will finally debut in Episode IX. In addition to that, she might be one of the few survivors who decided to join Kylo and the Knights of Ren.
It's certainly an interesting idea but it is important to point out that the leak has not yet been confirmed. We would recommend taking this with a grain of salt.
Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019.
