Star Wars: Episode IX Director J.J. Abrams No Longer 'Beholden' To The Past Of The Franchise

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams might have actually taken a few notes from Adam Driver's Kylo Ren, because it looks like the filmmaker feels like he's no longer chained to the franchise's past while working on his newest Star Wars entry.

Vanity Fair just recently published a comprehensive spread about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and the publication featured various interviews with the film's cast and crew. Speaking in an interview with Abrams, the publication learned that the director felt somewhat liberated working on Episode IX, explaining that he no longer felt "beholden" to the past of the Star Wars franchise.

"Working on nine, I found myself approaching it slightly differently— which is to say that, on seven, I felt beholden to Star Wars in a way that was interesting— I was doing what to the best of my ability I felt Star Wars should be… (This time) it felt slightly more renegade; it felt slightly more like, you know, F**k it, I'm going to do the thing that feels right because it does, not because it adheres to something," Abrams explained in detail.

Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that Abrams is going to throw away all of the history and tradition of the Star Wars franchise. What it means is that Abrams is no longer afraid of taking risks with his film. While this might sound exciting for fans waiting to see Star Wars take on a new direction, more traditional fans might express concern over Abrams feeling "slightly more renegade." After all, Star Wars: The Last Jedi did the same thing, and the die-hard fanboys weren't all too pleased with the film's outcome.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
