Star Wars: Episode IX Aims To Answer Two Major Questions

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have left Star Wars fans with a whole lot of questions that everyone's hoping to see answered in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, but it looks like the third and final entry in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy only has a couple of questions driving its story.

Speaking in an interview with Empire Magazine about questions he hopes to address in Star Wars: Episode IX, screenwriter Chris Terrio talks about the driving force behind his upcoming film.

According to the Star Wars writer, The Rise of Skywalker boils down to "Who is Rey" and "How strong is the Force?"

"One of them is a simple one: ‘Who is Rey?'," Terrio shared with the entertainment news outlet, "Which is a question that people not only wonder about quite literally but wonder about in the spiritual sense. How can Rey become the spiritual heir to the Jedi? We kept coming back to ‘Who is Rey?', and how can we give the most satisfying answer to that not only factually – because obviously people are interested in whether there's more to be learned of Rey's story – but more importantly who is she as a character? How will she find the courage and will and inner strength and power to carry on what she's inherited?"

The question about Rey's (Daisy Ridley) identity isn't new. Fans have been wondering about Rey's heritage and her identity ever since she first appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Sure, The Last Jedi might have revealed that the Star Wars heroine was nothing more than the daughter of two drunken junkers on Jakku, however, fans are holding on to the hope that Rey is actually more than an abandoned orphan. Some rumors say that Rey is the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Others say that she's actually the daughter of the new character, Zorri Bliss (Keri Russell).

After Rey's identity, Terrio says the next driving question in Episode IX is about the true strength of the Force.

"The second one is, ‘How strong is the Force?'" Terrio pointed out. "It sounds a little simple, but actually when you get down to it, that is a sort of Zen Koan that we would really meditate on – not literally in yoga poses or anything, but like we would discuss, ‘What is the Force and how strong is the Force?' Those two things were really important."

We can't wait to see how The Rise of Skywalker answers these two questions.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens premieres December 20, 2019.
