Star Wars: Episode IX Actor Domhnall Gleeson Reacts To J.J. Abrams' Return

There have been mixed reactions to J.J. Abrams taking over for Colin Trevorrow on Star Wars: Episode IX. However, Domhnall Gleeson is clearly thrilled that the director of The Force Awakens will be helming the highly anticipated sequel.

Gleeson is recently promoting his new film The Little Stranger. However, that didn't stop the Star Wars actor from confirming that he is already working on Episode IX. Gleeson also told Variety that Abrams' return "will be epic."

So why is Gleeson so happy to have Abrams back? The director may have given Gleeson's character a meatier role compared to how General Hux was portrayed in The Last Jedi. Hux was a decidedly more serious character in The Force Awakens whereas he ended up being the butt of most jokes in Rian Johnson's film. Gleeson could be hoping that Hux will return to his old ways now that Abrams is in charge.

There is little doubt that Gleeson's General Hux will still play a large role in Episode IX. Although the First Order officer allowed Kylo Ren to declare himself the new Supreme Leader, Kylo's final error in The Last Jedi could give Hux the advantage. Gleeson's character might challenge Kylo and take control of the First Order in the sequel.

Episode IX has already started production so it won't be long before we get more updates on the returning characters.

The still-untitled Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled for release on December 20, 2019.
